Op Stelten
Originally, stilts were a way for farmers to access their flooded land. Later, children began using them to play. In my recent series of paintings hink-stap-sprong, the subject is playing girls. This series is inspired by the schoolyard adjacent to my studio at the Bierumer School, not far from the mud flats, behind a dike where the ongoing struggle with water is clearly visible.
Op Stelten is an installation consisting of thirteen pairs of wooden children's stilts in the Kooiduinen on the Wadden island of Ameland. These children's stilts have high footrests, symbolizing the anticipated rising sea levels and the consequences for future generations. Are we playing a risky game?
