de Verwachting

de Verwachting is a series of seven life-size charcoal drawings of Wousje, Caroline, Sumin, Naomi, Haru, Corinda and Laetitia. Averted young women thoughtlessly holding a doll. The doll appeals to a past childhood, but at the same time to the expectation of motherhood. These images highlight an inner conflict, exploring themes of femininity, motherhood, and association with sacred figures such as the mother and virgin Mary. The women are turned away from us, but strikingly, the doll they are holding is actually facing the audience. Is motherhood presented here as a woman's ultimate destiny? Or is it simultaneously highlighting the complexity and emotional struggle of this role? Transferred cultural habits intrude. Time stands still for a moment and de Verwachting questions the obvious.
