In this series of paintings, young girls are depicted with simple yet meaningful attributes: a jump rope, a bunch of flowers, a bag, a cup and saucer, or marbles. Some are shown with an elastic band around their legs, referencing the childhood game. Their posture, without their faces shown, remains anonymous yet conveys a quiet strength, filled with memories of youth and rituals. The attributes serve as symbols of identity and the transition to adulthood, captured in a moment of stillness.
studio visit
In this video, I invite you to take a look inside my studio, where I shared the work I had been developing for the Studio Collection Solo: hink-stap-sprong exhibition at Kunstpunt Groningen, which took place from March 31 to May 27, 2023. I discussed my creative process and the central role the female figure plays in my paintings, drawings, and installations.
about a painting
In this video, I describe the painting of a girl who is positioned in a possibly recognizable pose. The details of her clothing, the sagging socks, the buttons, and the flower in her hand give a hint of her personality, but her identity remains mysterious. She seems to step from the past into the present, yet her face is unreadable. She stands powerfully on her feet, isolated from her surroundings, yet at the same time vulnerable. The background and linen shine through her, making her pose perhaps a mere façade, a silent agreement.
