Armed Angels series
Regional Dress as an Expression of Identity
These egg tempera paintings are inspired by traditional costumes from Zeeland.
Using old photographs as a reference, I paint women in regional dress, isolated from their everyday surroundings. By working with transparent layers of egg tempera and using a restrained colour palette, I aim to evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era. Sometimes the garments appear to stand on their own, as if the wearer has vanished—a subtle play of presence and absence. The sharply defined contours, within which textures and carefully applied brushstrokes are visible, suggest a restriction of movement.
By adding delicate details—accessories, jewellery, stitching, and patterns in the garments—I zoom in on what is strictly personal and individual. While painting, I let my imagination roam freely, allowing the woman to emerge intuitively from the paint.
The series is titled Armed Angels, a reference to the sustainable fashion brand whose mission—'not to do fashion, but to do the right thing'—resonates deeply. It serves both as a tribute to the women portrayed and as a subtle call for awareness: strength, care, and resistance wrapped in tradition.
